Series: Dark Protectors (Book 6)
Author: Rebecca Zanetti
Genre: Paranormal Romance
OMG words cannot express how much I LOVED Shadowed ! Jase Kayrs is the youngest of the Kayrs brothers; always fun, carefree, and precisely deadly....that is until he is captured and tortured for nearly 5 years by the Demon race. Jase's book picks up 5 years after he was rescued and readers find him still emotionally wounded, angry, and intent of revenge. So intent on revenge that he's willing to do just about anything, including mating a woman he doesn't love, to further his cause of taking down the demons that caused him so much pain.
Brenna Dunne is the 8th sister, born after the 7th sister of a 7th sister. She has spent her life feeling like a freak because there's never been an 8th child born to the 7th sister after a 7th daughter has been born. I know, totally confusing but significant. Brenna has been dying for the past 10 years, after being poisoned by planekite, an element found in Russia that is deadly to witches. Believing she has no other option to save her own life, Brenna enters into an arranged mating with Jase to see if mating a vampire will alter her blood cells and tissues, ultimately removing the poison from her body.
From the start of their relationship, Brenna and Jase have an easy friendship, born of their interactions with one another over several centuries. Brenna reminds Jase of who he use to be and he can't help but feel warmth while in her presence. When an ancient prophecy is unveiled that ties Brenna to the winter solstice and the Pagrurus Comet, Jase will stop at nothing to keep her safe while also hoping that her coming into immense power can somehow restore his power over the elements.
As I have gushed several times before, I love the sense of family that Zanetti breathes into her characters. Jase's emotional state has taken it's toll on all of the brothers and they unfortunately have buried their feelings and emotions in an effort to allow Jase to find a way to move forward without added pressure from his family. No longer do the brothers solve their problems with Jase by beating the crap out of him, instead he is treated as if a slap up side his head will break him.
The parts of this book that I loved most was Jase and Brenna slowly understanding what they mean to one another. Jase if the typical dominant, overbearing, and demanding Kayrs brother, however Brenna is having none of his dominance without throwing major attitude and challenging his every demand. Being a counselor, I also loved Jase's interactions with Lily the Prophet. She was hilarious and her methods for getting Jase to accept his angry, as well as his feelings for Brenna were unconventional but effective. There's much that happens in this book including more on the Janie, Zane, and Kalin front (even though we STILL have no clue what the hell Zane is....blows smoke out my ears and nose!) and Zanetti definitely ratcheted up the suspense in this book. If you have been a fan of the series, Shadowed is definitely not to be missed. I'm giving this 5 notes and 4 flames!
