Catalia "Cat" Fisa is a powerful clairvoyant known as the Kingmaker. This smart-mouthed soothsayer has no interest in her powers and would much rather fly under the radar, far from the clutches of her homicidal mother. But when an ambitious warlord captures her, she may not have a choice…
Griffin is intent on bringing peace to his newly conquered realm in the magic-deprived south. When he discovers Cat is the Kingmaker, he abducts her. But Cat will do everything in her power to avoid her dangerous destiny and battle her captor at every turn. Although up for the battle, Griffin would prefer for Cat to help his people willingly, and he's ready to do whatever it takes to coax her…even if that means falling in love with her.
I'm a huge fan of both Ilona Andrews and Nalini Singh and both of these writing geniuses are known for writing some of the best urban fiction books out there. Both the Kate Daniels series and the Guild Hunter series are on my automatic order lists so when I saw the description for A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet, I was quite intrigued. Given that she was a new author, I wanted to give her a shot and see how she paired up to two of my favorites and boy was I pleasantly surprised.
A Promise of Fire is a riveting read that kept me on the edge of my seat from the beginning to the end. Like Kate Daniels, our main character Cat has some powerful parentage that we are not quite sure about, and she literally has the Gods on her side. When she meets and is kidnapped by Griffin, the story really takes off. I'm not going to go into any of the details from the actual story because I don't want to give any of the juicy morsels away. What I will say is Cat has earned her own place in my heart right next to Kate and Elena. She is fearless yet fearful, she loves hard, will sacrifice herself to protect those closest to her and most of all she takes NO crap from Griffin. Griffin on the other hand makes you love and hate him all at once. Like Curren and Raphael, he sometimes made me scream and then I absolutely loved him.
If you enjoy books like the Kate Daniels Series, the Guild Hunter Series, or the Mercy Thompson series, you will love A Promise of Fire! I'm giving this one 4.5 Sizzling Keys!
